Sokol days in Brno

23. září 2023

On a warm weekend in June, trams, or as the locals call them – šalinas, were in operation throughout Brno and decorated with the Czech Sokol flags. The Moravian metropolis hosted a festival of sport and exercise, the Sokol Days.

It was in 2022 that the Sokol gymnastics organization commemorated 160 years since its foundation. The history of this organization faithfully reflects the turbulent fate of Czechoslovakia during the 20th century. The Sokol gyms healthy patriotism developed in addition to physical exercise, therefore the Sokol members stood up against the totalitarian regime, whether it was fascism in 1938 or the emerging communism in 1948. Sokol was banned by the regime for several decades. Nowadays, the organization is looking for new impulses and new members. Zuzana Botiková reported from Brno.
