Racing and Restless
"Racing Thoughts" is an audio documentary about the search for identity and understanding of one's own mind at a time when society celebrates productivity but still struggles with different ways of thinking.
Author and filmmaker Ivona Remundová opens up about her journey to being diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 41—a diagnosis that finally helped her understand why she had felt "impossible" her whole life, even though she had managed to graduate from college, raise children, and make films. This intimate audio confession breaks down stereotypes about ADHD as a disorder for hyperactive boys. Instead, it offers an authentic dive into the inner world of a woman whose brain functions like "Prague during rush hour." The documentary provides a unique opportunity to experience a moment of relief when the labels "unreliable" and "chaotic" finally receive a meaningful explanation. With disarming honesty and humor, Remundová captures the awkwardness of her new self-image, her first experiences with medication, and traumatic childhood memories. In doing so, she sensitively raises fundamental questions: Who determines what is "normal"? Why are girls with ADHD so often overlooked? And can the characteristics associated with ADHD even be an advantage in some contexts? The documentary combines personal experiences with the expert views of psychiatrists and presents ADHD in a new light—not as a deficit, but as a specific neurotype that has its place in society. When the psychiatrist points out that "humanity needs all neurotypes, and that is why it is so successful," the documentary offers a liberating perspective not only for people with ADHD, but for anyone who has ever felt "different." "Racing Thoughts" culminates with an original song expressing the essence of the documentary: "ADHD doesn't walk, ADHD runs. It haunts me in the tower, splashing on my lighthouse." It is a work that inspires us to rethink simplistic ideas about the human mind and to reflect on how complex and rich the different ways in which we perceive and process the world can be.
