War Has No Soundtrack

19. srpen 2025

Pavel Sterec's radio documentary was recorded during his trips to Ukraine in 2023 and 2024, where he helped produce Zhanna Kadyrova’s art and participated in cultural events in Kyiv, Lviv, Yasina, and Uzhhorod.

He accompanied artists and musicians, visited them, and interviewed them at their performances and exhibitions in Prague, Venice, Vienna, and Berlin. Although these are purely subjective observations, the author noted the special significance and relationship of contemporary art to music and sound. It is as if this medium is able to speak even where the image is lost or would be too explicit, intuitively forcing the observer to turn away from it. Sound permeates the body, fills the space, and makes it easier to relax, concentrate, and experience collectivity, transgression, and catharsis. Sirens, power outages, limited mobility, and nighttime curfews have violently reshaped how, where, and with whom Ukrainians listen to music. But they have also led to the fundamental question of whether it is even possible to listen to music and have fun when our loved ones are dying under the rubble of their homes, on the front lines, or simply from fear for their loved ones and mourning for the dead? And yet, the very act of listening or dancing is a form of resistance, a promise that life continues and a forshadowing of victory.
