The Christmas Stories of Kyiv exhibition
On December 23, 2021, Ukrainian radio broadcast a report from a Christmas exhibition. Anticipating Christmas and New Year’s Day, residents of Kyiv did not know that just two months later the peaceful capital of the European country would be bombed by the Russian army, and that its satellite towns of Borodianka, Bucha and Irpin would turn into an inferno.
In December, the Museum of Kyiv History invited visitors to a fascinating journey to the past. In replicated interiors of the early and mid-20th century they could see old Christmas tree glass decorations, exclusive porcelain dolls, figurines of father Frost, gifts that children found under the Christmas tree more than a hundred years ago, masquerade costumes, and unique greeting cards.
Visitors were fascinated by greeting cards painted by Ukrainian artists living abroad at the time. One of the exhibits contributed by Kyiv families was a figurine of Father Frost resembling a Ukrainian Cossack. The great Ukrainian artist Hryhoriy Svitlytsky made it with his own hands in 1926.
In the background of the report listeners could hear the music being played in the exhibition halls, particularly Shchedryk by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych. For more than a century its English version, Carol of the Bells, has been one of the most popular Christmas songs in the world. On the eve of New Year’s Day of 2022, Ukrainians made a wish: to enter a university, or get married, or have a baby, or travel abroad… No one knew that the war would break into their homes... The report by Kateryna Shevtsova, a Ukrainian Radio journalist, recalls the atmosphere of Kyiv’s last peaceful days before the full-scale war.
