Carbon
The podcast series has 12 episodes, usually one new episode per month. All episodes are always available in both Czech and German language versions. Each episode is approximately 20-25 minutes long and usually contains 2-3 interviews with experts from the Czech Republic and Germany, accompanied by a report from the field.
Work on each episode begins with thorough research of the topic, including identifying suitable interviewees, followed by recording the report and interviews with experts. We then listen to the recorded material (usually about 2 hours of audio) and gradually develop the final script to focus on the one or two most relevant subtopics while explaining often quite complex issues as clearly as possible. This is followed by translation of the script and work directly in the studio (dubbing, editing). The podcast is available on all common podcast platforms (Spotify, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts), on the Radio Prague International website and also in the mujrozhlas.cz app. The Czech version is called Karbon (CZ), the German version Karbon (DE). A shorter version of the podcast (approx. 12 minutes) always appears directly on the German broadcast of Radio Prague International. We also run a Facebook page for the podcast.
Basic Information
The first Czech-German climate podcast. How do Czechs and Germans differ in their views on climate change? What topics resonate and what is not talked about much? How will the energy sector change in the future? What care does our countryside require? What can each of us contribute - and where are systemic changes already needed?
Over the course of twelve episodes, the podcast series explores various topics related to the climate crisis. We provide a glimpse into the society-wide debate on the topic in the two neighbouring countries. We try to point out systemic shortcomings, but we also present positive examples from practice that can inspire listeners. Topics covered in the podcast included, for example, nuclear energy, the potential of renewable energy, agriculture and the countryside, a just transformation of coal regions and the extent to which each of us can affect climate change.
The podcast’s guests are leading experts from both countries, representatives of civil society and municipal politicians. Invitations were accepted by Claudia Kemfert from the German Economic Institute (DIW), Dieter Gerten and Leonie Wenz from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK Potsdam), Karsten Rinke from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ Leipzig), and from the Czech Republic, for example, the director of the DUHA movement Anna Kárníková and Zuzana Harmáčková from the Global Change Research Institute at the Czech Academy of Sciences (Czechglobe).
The podcast is produced by Radio Prague International in cooperation with Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Prague.
