It left its mark on those who remember the tragedy, sometimes physical, more often emotional.
It also changed the way we view the railway and was the beginning of modern-day safety rules for trains in Portugal.
Journalist Camila Vidal went to Alcafache, the site of the collision between a regional train and an internacional one, to try to reconstruct what happened that day and how it shaped the future of those involved.
We hear the testimonies of the survivors, those who were there that day, and also look at who was held responsible - or not. It's impossible to say how many people died, but authorities estimate around 150 victims. Some are still considered missing.
