A Tourist in Their Own City. Young Aleppans Discover the Beauty of the Old City, From Which the War Has Cut Them Off
After fifteen years of civil war, Aleppo, Syria, lies in ruins; the city’s historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has also been largely destroyed.

Many young Aleppans from other parts of the city never had a chance to see the center, which was ravaged by fighting. Only now, after the war and the fall of the Assad regime, are they discovering their own city for the first time in their lives. They are being helped by activists who organize sightseeing walks for young Aleppans.

On Saturday evening, about thirty young men and women gather among the street vendors at the Antioch Gate, one of the main entrances to Aleppo’s Old City. Clearly, though, they aren’t heading to the market for eggs or olives.
