Palacký University presents two exhibitions on its history
The Temple of Wisdom exhibition recalls the long-forgotten story of the dialogue between science and religion. It also includes a unique exhibition of university insignia called Symbols of Wisdom - Thirteen Maces of the University of Olomouc, which was created in cooperation with the University of Innsbruck.
Since 1573, the University of Olomouc has been part of the global network of the Jesuit Catholic University, which in the early modern period included not only Europe but also Asia, Latin and South America. The emphasis on internationalisation, the consistent introduction of Latin as the language of communication and the elaborate organisational structure and hierarchy made the Jesuit colleges a sophisticated social network of early modern society. From its foundation, the University was closely linked to the Jesuit college itself, symbolically becoming part of the empire over which the sun never set.
The exhibition Symbols of Wisdom - Thirteen Maces of the University of Olomouc, presents newly documented contemporary and preserved maces in an intimate manner on illuminated panels. These include the rector and dean's maces of the University of Olomouc and the historical maces of the University, which are currently housed in Innsbruck. A catalogue of photographs of the thirteen maces and the rector and dean's chains has been prepared for this exhibition.
You can visit the entire exhibition at the Regional Museum in Olomouc from 5 October 2023 to 11 February 2024.
