Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead (Part 1/3)
This is the first episode of a three-part series based on the eponymous novel by Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk, Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead. The mysterious crime story with an environmental message taking place at the Polish-Czech border follows several inexplicable deaths linked to the local hunting club.
The main character and narrator of the story is the idiosyncratic pensioner Janina Duszejko, a former engineer who makes a living teaching English at a primary school. In her free time she translates poems by William Blake and does astrology. Janina Duszejko lives in a secluded place and the further away she is from other people the closer she gets to the natural world that surrounds her. She is therefore very sensitive to the callousness with which people treat nature. She considers people’s cruelty to animals as one of the worst modern sins. When people linked to the local hunters start dying inexplicably, Janina Duszejko is certain that it is the animals’ revenge on those who have hurt them so much.
The series was made for the occasion of Olga Tokarczuk’s jubilee, which the holder of several Polish literary prizes Nike and a Nobel Prize in Literature celebrated at the end of January 2022.
