Where is My Home?
The year is 1985. Fifty-six Namibian children board a plane under the blazing Angolan sun, destined for a new life in the heart of Europe. In socialist Czechoslovakia, they attend school, learn the local language, make friends, and experience parental love for the first time. Gradually, the local culture becomes their own. They become Czechoslovakians.
But a few years after the Velvet Revolution, an unexpected twist shatters their world, leaving a lasting impact on many of them. Why did these Namibian children come to Czechoslovakia? What was their life like here? Why were they sent back to Africa? And how are they living today? This podcast series by Lukáš Houdek seeks to uncover these answers, capturing their memories for the Paměť národa (Memory of Nations) project in Namibia in late 2021.
We will be presenting the project at Prix Bohemia Radio!
