Romania: Why is the diaspora in Western Europe voting for anti-European candidates?
The annulment of the first round of the presidential election in Romania has sparked international debate. The diaspora plays an important role in Romanian politics. According to various estimates, between three and eight million Romanians do not live or work in their home country.
And in the fall, the majority of diaspora Romanians voted for the far-right politician Calin Georgescu, who has since been excluded from the election. There are currently 154,000 people with Romanian citizenship living in Austria, and here too, right-wing candidates received a clear majority in the election. Markus Müller-Schinwald took a look at the ongoing election campaign in the diaspora.
