Turn the Lights Out! podcast shines light into shadows of human soul

21. březen 2017

Are you interested in the subjects of sexuality and intimacy? Are you into in new technology? If so, don’t miss the presentation The Podcasting Phenomenon. It takes place within the Prix Bohemia festival at the Arts Centre UP on 22 March.

Most people have probably heard the word podcasting but few know what it actually means. Podcasting is a way of delivering audio information via the internet. This year it is celebrating 13 years of existence. This project, which to a certain degree could do battle with radio for listeners, has been a fully exploited platform in our country in recent years.

What makes podcasting attractive is the ease of file sharing. The producer or maker of a piece posts it on the internet and from then on hardly needs to look after it. The visitor to the website downloads the file, most often in the MP3 format, and uploads it to any device that allows for the playing of files in that form. All he or she needs to do is to install a podcast reader.

The huge advantage of podcasts is that you can listen to them anytime, anywhere. They can be freely rewound, paused or skipped, which isn’t possible with regular radio programmes. At the same time, you can play podcasts in places with a poor signal, such as on the underground or at a mountain cottage.

Czech Radio delivers Turn the Lights Out! podcast

For these reasons Czech Radio has also focused on podcasting. This modern method makes it possible to bring society quite serious topics, and in a way that may also reach people who don’t normally listen to radio.

Classic radio programmes, such as Apothecary and Healthy weight-loss with Kateřina Cajthamlová, also appear in this form, as does the now cult show At the Hockey with a Microphone. Basically everybody can find something among Czech Radio’s programmes to listen to as they wish.

You can find us at http://www.rozhlas.cz/iradio/podcast/, where there are also instructions on how to download and play recordings.

Czech Radio has now gone one step further. Along with Tereza Nvotová, Bohdan Bláhovec and other artists it has produced its first original podcast Zhasni! (Turn the Lights Out!). The nine-part Radio Wave series explores the sexuality of the young generation and offers a different view of sex and intimacy. The first part premiered on 1 March this year.

One of the makers of Turn the Lights Out!, Roman Štětina, will introduce his work at a presentation at the Prix Bohemia Radio festival. The presentation will be compered by producers of the podcast from Czech Radio’s Creative Hub.

You will learn a great deal about the development of podcasting, its current state and future, and about how podcasts are distributed.
