Let Us Across the Rio Grande!

26. září 2024

Millions of people attempt to enter the United States through its southern border each year. Most of them are desperate families and individuals fleeing violence from drug cartels, hunger, poverty, or persecution by their own governments. The U.S. has a stake in some of these issues.

While the country has traditionally accepted many immigrants from Latin America and relied on their labour to fuel its economy, it has struggled to manage the influx. Recently, U.S. authorities have forced asylum seekers to wait outside the U.S. border, in dangerous parts of Mexico, for a chance to apply for asylum legally. Czech Radio's U.S. foreign correspondent Jan Kaliba travelled to the region to uncover and share the stories of these often dehumanized people. As part of a report series on life at the U.S.-Mexico border, he recorded in a refugee camp in the Mexican border town of Matamoros, just as a carload of humanitarian aid arrived from the U.S. side of the Rio Grande.
