King Ubu

27. září 2024

On the evening of 10 December 1896 at the Théâtre de l'Œuvre in Paris, a character appears on stage who will be as important to the future development of world theatre as Ibsen's Nora or Rostand's Cyrano.

The curtain rose and on the stage where Bonnard, Vuillard and Lautrec were working, Father Ubu uttered his first curse. Next, the audience followed the fate of Father Ubu, his wife Mother Ubu from their decision to kill the King of Poland, to seize the Polish crown, to the planning of the plot, to its execution, to an inglorious reign punctuated by the intoxication of power and the plundering of Poland, to the struggle with Russia to maintain their rule, to the glorious defeat and multiple escapes.
