“Help me! I‚m a child, I’m being shot." Hind‘s Last Phone Call from Gaza
The war in Gaza, following the terrorist attack by Hamas in Israel on October 7, is one of the most difficult chapters of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to report on, because international journalists are prohibited from entering the Strip independently.
To get as close as possible to the victims of the fighting, one only has to go to the Palestinian Red Crescent's operations centre in Ramallah. It is located in the occupied territories, more than 100 km from Gaza destruction, but it is here that requests for help and rescue from the Strip are constantly arriving.
Operators answering the calls give remote instructions to contain bleeding and treat gunshot wounds. Phone operators, like Rana Faqih, help women give birth under the rubble. Sometimes they succeed, sometimes not, interrupted by the roars of shelling.
