Gratitude
How do we express gratitude when words fail us? Michèle Seld, known as Michka, should have no trouble with this – she was first a journalist and then a proof-reader. Words obeyed her; she knew how to tame and command them.
For most of her life, language was both her shield and her sword, a tool she wielded with grace and ease. But now, suddenly, they are beginning to slip away. And she wonders: what will be left of her when the words disappear? She tries to fight, to hold on, to remain herself – but time is running out, and so much remains unsaid.
As a child, strangers showed her compassion and bravery, saving her from deportation to a concentration camp. But how can she thank them now, so many years later? Are they even still alive? And if they are, will her words reach them in time – or has that chance already slipped away too? And will her loved ones be able to express their gratitude to her? Despite the growing difficulty in expressing herself, which gives rise to many tragicomic moments, Michka remains an indomitable, witty, and kind-hearted woman.
Her humour endures, as does her warmth and clarity of spirit. Even as her sails and anchors, her beloved words, vanish into a sea of darkness, her courage, tenderness, and quiet defiance continue to shine – perhaps even more brightly now, in the soft, flickering light of what remains unspoken.
