Crossroads
“It is sechs o’clock,” was the famous bilingual sentence newsreader Zdeněk Mančal said on-air on the morning of 5 May 1945, only to kick off the Prague Uprising a few hours later with another radio announcement.
At exactly the same time, another radio destiny was being sealed. Journalist Alois Kříž was arrested in front of the radio building just after the first clashes broke out and was later sentenced to death for collaboration with the Protectorate regime.
In the radio drama Crossroads, the men’s paths cross that fateful morning to take them back in their memories to essential milestones – the choice between safety and risk, between career and conscience.
Crossroads takes the form of an admittedly fictional dialogue about the fundamental and partial decisions faced by two members of the war generation whose fates intersected at the then Protectorate Czech Radio. The production was prepared by director Petr Mančal, who is distantly related to the historic radio announcer.
