Carnation Revolution: Spain Eyes on Portugal

26. září 2024

How did Spaniards follow the Revolution of ‘74 in Portugal? With joy and hope that something similar would happen in their country, says someone who remembers that Thursday in April 50 years ago. The world was paying attention to what was happening in Portugal. In Spain, the interest was even more special, because the country had not yet freed itself from the bonds of Francoism.

The Portuguese revolution was considered ‘fundamental for Spain’ or ‘a beautiful, heroic and poetic dawn’.

These were some of the adjectives chosen by Guillermo Díaz and Adela Figueiroa, two Galicians who experienced 25 April 1974 in their youth. Across the border, 50 years later, the Carnation Revolution is still a hot topic in classrooms.
