Bulgaria: Labor migration is causing the country to die out
Anyone looking for vacant houses in north-western Bulgaria will quickly find what they are looking for. Since the fall of communism in the early 1990s, the population here has fallen by more than a third.
Many qualified workers have gone to work in Western Europe and never returned. This has started a downward spiral – because there is a shortage of workers, companies are also moving away, and because their tax revenues are lacking, the state is unable to take appropriate counter measures. Martha Georgiew took a look at the consequences of the massive exodus in the Vidin region.
